From Desa Rahayu to the World: Celebrating the People Behind Our Hats This Year

If there’s one thing this year has reminded us of, it’s that Topiku has never been just about hats. It has always been about people, about the hands that sew, the stories that shape us, and the community that has stood with us from Desa Rahayu all the way to the world.

As we close this milestone year, we’re looking back with gratitude at the people who make our purpose real every day: our artisans, long-time collaborators, and partners who have been part of Topiku’s decade-long journey.

In celebrating our 10th anniversary, we went back to where it all began: Desa Rahayu. What started as a simple intention to create a meaningful product that helps sustain local craftsmanship has grown into a community-powered movement.

This year, through the Stories of Desa Rahayu campaign, we highlighted the incredible individuals who have been crafting Topiku pieces for 10 years. Their stories remind us that sustainability is not just about materials, it’s about people, livelihoods, and legacy.

The Hands That Carry Our Story

Behind every Topiku hat is a story of dedication, craft, and community. Many of our artisans have stood with us since the beginning long before Topiku became what it is today. Their consistency, curiosity, and commitment to learning have shaped the quality we’re known for.

One of the earliest people to believe in Topiku was Kang Asep, the owner of a small hat production house in Desa Rahayu. He recalls meeting Monty 10 years ago, when Topiku was still an idea and not yet a brand. What began as a conversation turned into a decade-long collaboration built on trust, respect, and shared learning.

Today, his workshop remains one of the places where many of our hats are born. His leadership supports not only his own family, but also several others who rely on this craft for their livelihood.

Kang Messi, one of our artisans in Desa Rahayu

Kang Messi joined us not long after, in 2015. Back then, the idea of using recycled materials in hat-making wasn’t common. But with an open mind and a willingness to experiment, he learned how to transform discarded fabrics into something durable, wearable, and beautiful. His growth mirrors Topiku’s journey: resourceful, purpose-driven, and always evolving.

These individuals and many more behind the scenes are the reason Topiku exists today. Their stories remind us that craftsmanship is not just a skill; it’s a legacy passed down, nurtured, and strengthened over time.

Beyond the artisans, this year also strengthened our relationships with sourcing partners, collaborators, and the people who make our campaigns possible. Each partnership whether big or small has added to our mission of creating responsibly and telling meaningful stories through our products. From sustainable material suppliers to creative collaborators who helped bring our anniversary projects to life, this year has shown what’s possible when values align.

Our Artisans at Desa Rahayu

Topiku hats now travel farther than we ever imagined worn in cities and neighborhoods far from where they were first stitched. Yet every piece still carries the heart of Desa Rahayu.

This connection between a small village and the wider world is what keeps us grounded. It reminds us that impact grows when people grow together.

As we enter a new year, we’re committed to deepening our work with the community that raised us. Our goal remains the same: to continue empowering artisans, upholding responsible craftsmanship, and telling meaningful stories through what we create.

Topiku’s journey has always been a collective one and it will continue to be.
