Behind Every Topiku Hat: How We Make Sustainable Hats from Recycled Materials

At Topiku, every hat begins long before it reaches your hands. It starts with people, materials, and decisions made thoughtfully, openly, and with purpose. We believe transparency isn’t a trend it’s a responsibility.

That’s why we’re sharing exactly how our hats are made, step by step. From recycled plastic to upcycled fabrics, this is the real process behind what we create.

Topiku recycling process

1. Collection Starting with What Already Exists

Our process begins on the ground, literally. We source part of our raw materials by collecting plastic and metal scraps through local trash pickers in Indonesia. These individuals are an essential part of the waste ecosystem, yet are often overlooked.

By working within this existing system, we help redirect waste away from landfills while supporting local livelihoods. The materials collected here eventually become key components of our hats, including recycled-plastic brims and metal closures.

Each piece is carefully sorted and prepared before entering production. It’s not a perfect system, and we don’t claim it to be, but it’s real, human, and rooted in community-based impact.

2. Recycling Turning Plastic Waste into Purpose

Once collected, post-consumer plastic, such as discarded buckets, is cleaned, shredded, and processed locally. Instead of relying on energy-heavy industrial shortcuts, materials are sun-dried using natural energy before being transformed into durable components for our hats.

This step is a reminder that sustainability doesn’t always require high-tech solutions. Sometimes, meaningful progress comes from empowering communities to work with what already exists.

3. Upcycling Giving Fabrics a Second Life

Upcycling is at the heart of every Topiku product. We partner directly with manufacturers to reclaim deadstock fabrics, leftover cotton twill, and production offcuts that would otherwise go to waste.

These materials are reimagined into new designs. Because we work with reclaimed materials, no two production runs are ever the same, and that’s intentional. This approach helps reduce textile waste while giving each hat its own story.

4. Assembly Crafted by Experience, Not Mass Production

The final step is where everything comes together. Each Topiku hat is hand-sewn, shaped, and assembled by our senior artisans, who bring over 15 years of experience to their craft.

We don’t mass produce. Human hands allow us to control quality, avoid overproduction, and ensure every hat meets our standards before it leaves the studio.

At Topiku, we don’t claim to have all the answers. But we choose to be honest about how we make things, who is involved, and where our materials come from.

Because when you understand the journey behind what you wear, it becomes more meaningful and worth keeping for a long time.
